Rodents
Caring for rodents
Many people like to keep small mammals such as hamsters, gerbils and even chinchillas as pets – they are cute and cuddly and relatively easy to keep. However, each species has specific needs that have to be met.
Companionship
Different animals have different social requirements. Seek specialist advice about how to care for your small mammal before buying a cage or deciding whether or not you will need a companion for your pet. Some animals can live in pairs or groups, while others are solitary, so make sure you check before committing.
Habitat
Each different type of rodent or small mammal has different habitat requirements. A large home is always preferable, but some species’ – like chinchillas, which are very active – need to have big enclosures, with multiple layers. Investigate the habits of your chosen pet before buying it. Some small mammals need to climb, burrow or even have space to glide.
Also, just because a gerbil is a similar size to a hamster, that doesn’t mean it will be able to live in a hamster cage.
Seek specialist advice before buying your pet so that you can be sure that you're properly prepared for its arrival.
All small mammals need to have their enclosures cleaned out regularly, bedding changed and a warm home that is kept out of direct sunlight.
Many will also need a nesting box in their cage – a lot of small mammals and rodents are nocturnal so will need somewhere to sleep during the day.
Diet
Your pet’s diet will vary depending on what kind of animal you have. Check with a specialist to find out exactly what kind of food to feed your pet.
All animals need a constant supply of fresh, clean drinking water.
Many will also need a gnawing block to wear down long teeth.
Exercise
Rodents and small mammals are active animals, many becoming more alert at night. You need to make sure that your pets have enough space to exercise – or a suitable running wheel – as well as toys to stop them getting bored.
Health
Some animals such as ferrets will need injections to protect them against infectious diseases. Find out if your pet needs any vaccinations as soon as possible.
