Pet Insurance & Boarding Fees - What Happens When You're Ill?

A look at how insurance can protect your pet should you become incapacitated

When most people think of pet insurance, the obvious thing is to consider what will happen when their cat or dog becomes ill.

However, lots of pet owners in the UK don’t think about how their pet insurance could cover them for when they’re not well and have nobody to look after their animals.

Below I’ll take a look at two of the possible consequences of not having pet insurance that covers boarding fees or someone else taking care of your pet while you’re in hospital.

When you have to go into hospital to be treated for a sudden illness or medical complaint, it’s not always clear how long you’re going to be in for.

If you don’t have anyone who can look after your cat or dog while you’re getting treatment and don’t have any pet insurance in place, you could end up paying a lot of money on kennel and cattery fees.

It’s worth checking your current pet insurance policy to see what it does or doesn’t cover regarding kennel and cattery fees. Some policies may only cover you after you’ve been in hospital for a set period of time, usually around 4 or 5 days.

If your pet insurance policy doesn’t mention any cover for paying cattery and kennel fees when you have to go into hospital, you may want to choose a different pet insurance provider when your policy comes up for renewal.

If you live alone with your pet, another option is to ask a friend or relative to look after your cat or dog until you get back home from hospital.

Some pet insurance companies make provision for this as well as kennel and cattery fees. For example, you might be able to get an allowance of £5 per day to help whoever is looking after your pet to meet food costs and anything else they might need.

It’s important to note this type of pet insurance cover will only apply to someone from outwith your own household taking care of your pet. So, if you live with your partner or spouse, and one of you has to go into hospital for some time, you will not be eligible to claim any daily allowance to cover the costs of looking after your pet.
